Tour to Abdeen Palace and The Royal Family Tombs

Day 1

First site worth visiting is known as Abdeen Palace, originally designed by French architect Rousseau and commissioned by Khedive Ismail Pasha in 1863. The grand palatial complex with 500 rooms and vast grounds served as royal residence until abolition of monarchy and now houses many museums, including museums of Military and Presidential Gifts.

Hidden away in the so-called City of the Dead is your next discovery – the ornate Royal Tombs from the end of the 19th century.

If the main gate to the mausoleums is reminiscent of the sad end of monarchy in Egypt's, further along the way you will be amazed at the tombs' size and their ornate Ottoman Baroque decorations. The two most remarkable tombs belong to Mohamed Tawfiq Pasha and his wife, Amine whose generosity earned her the nickname “Mother of Charity”.
