Islamic Cairo Tour

Day 1

Your time-travel starts with a visit to Ibn Tulun Mosque. Dating back to 876 AD it is the largest and oldest one in the city surviving in its original form.

Saladin Citadel, a magnificent medieval fortification perched on a hill on the outer fringes of the capital will take you back to the 12th century. The complex includes the Alabaster Mosque, an exquisite example of Ottoman architecture commissioned by Mohamed Ali Pasha.

It is in the Old Cairo quarter that you will find the witness to the beginnings of the Islamic era in Egypt. The mosque of Amr ibn al-‘As, an Arab warrior who led the conquest of Egypt in 640 AD, was the first Muslim house of prayer built in Africa.

In the afternoon, you will visit Cairo's oldest bazaar, Khan El Khalili, and Al Azhar Mosque whose scholars represent the highest religious authority in Sunni Islam and still influence the entire Islamic world.

The day of discovery will end with a walk down the picturesque Moaz Street and savouring mint tea in one of Cairo's centuries-old traditional cafes.
